Five claims about robot brains and bodies, scored
The thesis behind Tidewell, tested against about 175 sources: the brain is the future, but not the way most people say, and Singapore's edge is specific rather than general.
The brain is the real future direction
The brain is where the unsolved problem, the capital and the valuation multiples sit. Skild is valued above $14B, Physical Intelligence near $11B in talks, Figure at $39B. Unitree's own IPO prospectus concedes that brain research was minimal until 2024 and now directs nearly half its proceeds to model training.
Tesla Optimus is not yet the proof
No third party has verified Optimus doing autonomous useful work. Production had not started by the July 2026 earnings call. The credible brain leaders today are Figure, Physical Intelligence, Google DeepMind, NVIDIA and Skild, and none of them is a platform a small company can build on except through open weights.
Chinese robots do have brains now
AgiBot GO-2, Unitree UnifoLM, ByteDance GR-3, Alibaba RynnBrain and Qwen-Robot, Huawei CloudRobo and Ant LingBot are real models with open weights and top-venue papers. Galbot runs pharmacy picking above 95 percent success in more than twenty cities. The gap to the frontier is roughly one model generation.
Teleoperation is the data engine, not a wrong turn
Every serious lab collects teleoperation data. China has more than forty state-funded data factories and ten times the bodies in the field. The strategic risk is that the data flywheel closes the brain gap faster than anyone closes the body gap.
Singapore's edge is specific
On-robot chips are no edge at all: Jetson Thor is a low-control export item and Chinese firms were its launch partners. The edge is a trusted jurisdiction, open middleware such as RoMi-H, testbeds at Punggol and Tuas, and the freedom to buy the best commodity parts while building the parts that matter.
